Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has reacted to the viral ‘hotel-gate’ story, insisting he never made the alleged remarks and his words were misinterpreted.
Nigerian international Alex Iwobi drew widespread attention on Monday after posting a video that appeared to show subpar accommodation provided for the national team in Morocco ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier against Gabon.
The Fulham midfielder’s initial video, which quickly went viral, showed the surroundings of what many fans and critics interpreted as the team’s official hotel in Rabat, sparking significant outrage among Nigerian football fans who criticised the perceived neglect of player welfare.
However, the 29-year-old star has now released a second video to clarify the situation and address the backlash, stating that the entire incident was a matter of interpretation since he never uttered any complaint.
“You see life, yeah, it’s all about perspective,” Iwobi stated in a video shared on social media. “Because I snapped the view I have, people are thinking ‘this guy is ungrateful’ but I never said one thing. I just did one look, I never said one thing.”
Dismissing the controversy with a philosophical touch, the midfielder compared the team’s situation to wider life disparities. “In life, some people have yachts, some have beds, yo, I am comfy, I’m playing Mario Kart. Anyways, let me go and focus, got big game coming up.”
The incident comes as the Super Eagles, who began arriving in the Moroccan capital on Sunday, prepare for a must-win 2026 FIFA World Cup African Playoff semi-final against Gabon, scheduled for Thursday, November 13.
