Tragedy as JSS 3 Student Kills 23-Year-Old Man in Cross River

A Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3) student from Ugboro Secondary School in Bekwara Local Government Area has been arrested for killing a 23-year-old man during a fight after school.

The student, identified as Ogbeche, was reportedly fighting with another student named Nicholas on Tuesday when a young man named Oshen tried to stop the fight.

An eyewitness, Lizzy, said that while Oshen was separating them, Ogbeche got angry because he believed Oshen was taking sides. He left the fight, picked up a heavy pestle (used for pounding food), and hit Oshen on the head with it.

“When he picked up the pestle, people were shouting at him to drop it, but he didn’t listen. He went ahead and struck Oshen. The pestles we use here are very heavy — just one hit can do a lot of damage,” Lizzy explained.

Oshen collapsed and was rushed to a hospital in Ogoja, but sadly, he died later that night.

Oshen was said to be from a well-known family in Bekwara. His late father, Oshen Ushaka, was one of the early wealthy men in the community.

Locals say that Ogbeche has a history of being violent, including getting into fights and even threatening other students with a machete.

However, this is the first time one of his actions has led to someone’s death.
The police have confirmed that Ogbeche has been arrested and is currently being held in Ogoja prison.
