The Federal Government has dismissed civil servants holding degrees from private tertiary institutions in Benin Republic and Togo.
This was confirmed on Wednesday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. He disclosed that the directive affects federal workers who graduated from these institutions between 2017 and the present.
The decision follows an earlier announcement in August by the government, which identified only eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic as accredited to award degrees to Nigerians.
The crackdown was prompted by an investigative report revealing how a journalist from Daily Nigerian obtained a degree from a university in Benin Republic within two months and used it to qualify for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
In response, the Federal Government banned the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from tertiary institutions in both countries, citing concerns over the integrity of their academic programs.
This latest action reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring that academic qualifications used for federal employment meet stringent standards of credibility and authenticity.
