Sokoto State Government pledged additional support to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Reproductive Health supporting partners to eradicate and fistula and promote safe motherhood in the state.
The wife of the State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Ahmad Aliyu gave the assurance and commended the effort of the fund which she noted has over the last two decade supported over 140,000 fistula repairs and surgeries .
Aliyu said this was in addition to over 12,000 women and girls received social reintegrations support between 23018 to 2023.
While in Sokoto ,over 500 women and girls were repaired empowered and reintegrated to their respective communities .
While noted that fistula primarily is cause by prolong labour without timely medical intervention and as result women suffers physical and emotional pains .
Over 2 million women globally continued to suffer from this condition for to due inadequate access to maternal health care policy .
She gave the assurance at an occasion to celebrate world fistula day and safe motherhood held at maryam Abacha Women and children hospital Sokoto.
Mrs. Aliyu said this was to ensure every women in Sokoto State have particularly pregnant one have access to quality health care for safe delivery.
She then pledged to provide a generator and other hospital equipment to the hospital for the smooth conduct of it’s activities.
She re-affirming the commitment of the state government to improving the activities of the hospital also called on women to always engage in small scale businesses so as to be self dependents.
Mrs. Aliyu also donated cash assistance to the VVF patients and also called on the management of the hospital to forward their challenges to the state government for it’s urgent intervention.
The State Commissioner for health ,Hajiya Asabe Balarabe said the state government has establish a VVF centre as well as providing them with psychosocial support to have a better life after they recovered.
Earlier, the CMD of the Hospital Dr Hadiza Aliyu Tori explained some of the challenges affecting the hospital among which is electricity.
