In a bid to permanently address the problematic issue of payment of pension and other entitlements of civil servants on retirement, Abia State government has finalized arrangement for the launch of a contributory pension scheme in November.
The scheme, according to the Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu, would be launched by governor Alex Otti in line with the ongoing reforms in the state’s civil service, where workers’ welfare is prioritized.
He said the present government, at inception took the responsibility to clear outstanding pension arrears owed to Abia workers by the previous administration, adding that, the issue of gratuity would also be settled once and for all when the committee set up by the governor for that purpose concludes its assignment.
“With the launch of this pension contributory scheme, the ugly issue of owing pension payments and arrears will become a thing of the past.”
