Alfred Emberger Elected New Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly After Dajoh’s Resignation

The Benue State House of Assembly has elected Alfred Emberger as its new speaker, following the sudden resignation of former speaker Aondona Dajoh.

Emberger’s election took place during an emergency plenary session on Sunday, which was presided over by the deputy speaker, Lami Danladi-Ogenyi. Notably, Emberger was one of four lawmakers suspended just days earlier for allegedly attempting to remove the former speaker.

At the session, Majority Leader Saater Tiseer moved a motion to lift the suspension of the four members, a motion that was seconded by Samuel Jiji, who represents the Logo State Constituency. The motion was unanimously adopted.

“Following the motion raised by the majority leader and supported by members of the house, this house has resolved to lift the suspension of the four members,” Deputy Speaker Danladi-Ogenyi announced.

Once reinstated, the four members rejoined the session, where Douglas Akyaa of the Makurdi South Constituency nominated Alfred Emberger for the role of speaker. The nomination was seconded by Abu Umoru, representing the Apa Constituency. With no other contenders, Emberger was sworn in by the Clerk of the House, John Hwande.

In his acceptance speech, Speaker Emberger expressed gratitude to his predecessor for his service and pledged to lead with transparency, unity, and respect for all voices in the Assembly.

“To my esteemed colleagues, I assure you that this leadership will be anchored on inclusiveness, fairness, and respect for diverse opinions,” he said.

He also reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to maintaining a constructive relationship with the executive and judiciary, while upholding the Assembly’s independence in line with the principle of separation of powers.
