Falcons Names Squad Against Tunisia

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will begin their journey at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) today, as they take on Tunisia in their first Group B match at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

Nigeria, who are the most successful team in the history of the tournament with nine titles, are looking to reclaim the trophy and assert their dominance once again. The Falcons have been drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana.

Ahead of today’s clash, head coach Justin Magudu has named a strong starting line-up, showing that the team is fully prepared and not taking any opponent for granted. The Falcons go into the match in high spirits after defeating Ghana and playing a goalless draw with Portugal in their build-up friendlies.

In goal, dependable shot-stopper Chiamaka Nnadozie will be standing tall, as fans at home hope she continues her impressive club form at international level. The defence line includes Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin and Ashleigh Plumptre—four players known for their strength, speed and composure under pressure.

In the middle of the park, Halimatu Ayinde and Deborah Abiodun will form a strong midfield duo, with Toni Payne operating just ahead of them. This trio is expected to control the tempo of the game and ensure that the Falcons dominate play.

On the flanks, team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Tenerife star Rinsola Babajide will provide width and speed, as they aim to stretch the Tunisian defence and create scoring chances. Leading the attack is Nigeria’s most decorated female footballer, Asisat Oshoala, whose experience and killer instinct in front of goal could make all the difference.

The full starting XI is: Chiamaka Nnadozie (goalkeeper); Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin, Ashleigh Plumptre (defenders); Deborah Abiodun, Halimatu Ayinde (midfielders); Rasheedat Ajibade (captain), Toni Payne, Rinsola Babajide (wingers); and Asisat Oshoala (striker).

As the competition kicked off on Friday, all eyes are now on the Super Falcons to deliver another solid performance and push towards a record-extending 10th continental title. Nigerians at home and abroad will be watching with great expectations, hoping their beloved team begins the tournament with a convincing win.

With a mix of youth and experience, this current squad is full of quality and determination. The game against Tunisia is just the first step in what promises to be an exciting tournament for the Super Falcons and their fans.
