The Federal Government has started giving out ambassadorial appointments, and some well-known Nigerians are on the list.
Among those selected are former senator Shehu Sani, ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri, and two former governors from the South-East—Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia State). They are part of a group of nominees being considered for top diplomatic roles in Nigeria’s embassies and high commissions abroad.
According to reliable sources, the nominees have already begun the screening process. They were asked to visit the nearest Department of State Services (DSS) offices for background checks. They were also told to submit details about their education and work history.
Others who have gone through the process include former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro, and former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode. Reports say they have already been cleared for their new assignments.
This move comes after President Bola Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors in September 2023. Since then, there has been no official representation in many foreign missions, which caused concern among Nigerians abroad and international partners.
Earlier this year, the government promised that new ambassadors would be named soon. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, said the delay was because of a lack of funds.
Now that the screening is ongoing, many believe the Federal Government will soon release the full list of appointed ambassadors and their countries of assignment.
These new appointments are expected to bring back strong leadership to Nigeria’s embassies and strengthen the country’s image across the world.
