A chilling warning has been issued by the Nigerian Police Force as the connection between the modern hookup culture and the alarming rise in missing persons continues to deepen.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, shed light on a harrowing reality that has left many Nigerians reeling.
Odutola revealed that young women aged 20 to 32 are the primary victims of this growing menace. In her words, “This particular menace is very serious, and I would like a lot of young people to understand the danger in the hookup culture. Today, we receive numerous reports of missing persons. When investigations begin, not less than ten young girls go missing daily.”
The grim revelation points to an unsettling trend: many of these cases are not coincidental but orchestrated by strangers who exploit hookup apps and channels to lure unsuspecting victims. These women are often invited to unfamiliar locations, only to meet tragic fates, including falling prey to ritual killings.
The motive? A pervasive and ugly belief among some young Nigerians that ritual killings can bring wealth and success. Odutola highlighted that the rising hookup culture has become a breeding ground for such practices, especially in Ogun State, where ritual-related disappearances are becoming disturbingly common.
“This isn’t new,” Odutola acknowledged, “but the frequency of these incidents is alarming. Most cases of missing girls and ritual killings occurring in Ogun State of recent can be traced back to hookup arrangements. However, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police has been proactive in tackling these ugly incidents.”
The police’s revelations paint a grim picture of a society where desperation and moral decay intersect, leading to devastating consequences. As the hookup culture continues to thrive in Nigeria, the need for vigilance, education, and strict monitoring of digital platforms facilitating these encounters becomes more urgent than ever.
While the police work to curb these crimes, the public is urged to prioritize safety and rethink casual engagements that could lead to irreversible tragedy. For many families, the warning comes too late, but for others, it could be the lifeline that prevents yet another young woman from becoming a statistic in this horrifying trend.
