The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Benue State local government elections, winning all 23 chairmanship and 276 councillorship seats contested across the state.
This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC), Richard Tombowua, who declared the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Makurdi.
Tombowua described the election as peaceful, transparent, and without incident. “The election held yesterday was free, fair, and smooth across all local governments in the state,” he said. “The APC emerged victorious in all 23 chairmanship positions and 276 councillorship seats.”
According to Tombowua, five of the eight political parties that initially submitted candidates participated in the election, including the APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
In a response to the results, Ibrahim Idoko, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council and a representative of the Labour Party, lauded the electoral commission for its professionalism in conducting the elections. He also praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for ensuring a level playing field for all political parties, while hinting that his party would review the election results and make its position known in due course.
With the APC’s complete dominance of the local government polls, the party has solidified its hold on Benue’s political landscape, while opposition parties reassess their strategies in light of the outcome.
