Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has strongly condemned the eruption of communal hostilities leading to property destruction and injuries among residents of villages bordering Langtang North and Mikang Local Government Areas of the state.
In response to the violence that erupted over the weekend, Governor Mutfwang expressed his condolences to the victims, condemning the clashes as unnecessary and unacceptable.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, affirmed this development in Jos on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Monday, the governor urged security agencies to apprehend those behind the violent attacks in the affected communities.
Signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the statement stressed that such actions undermine the government’s efforts to promote peace and unity among citizens from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, essential for advancing the state’s development and prosperity.
Expressing dismay over the conflict, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the significance of dialogue as the most civilized and effective method of resolving disputes. He questioned the logic behind individuals resorting to violence, circumventing the law, and targeting innocent communities with arson.
“The governor called on security agencies to respond decisively and to hold the perpetrators and their sponsors accountable to the full extent of the law. He also urged swift mobilization to the affected areas to prevent any further escalation of the situation.
“Furthermore, Governor Mutfwang appealed to traditional, community, and religious leaders, as well as key stakeholders from the affected communities, to initiate dialogue and work towards an amicable resolution of the disputes in order to foster an atmosphere of harmonious co-existence.
“Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to establishing lasting peace throughout the state, Governor Mutfwang said he looks forward to a united, tranquil, and thriving Plateau where all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity, support one another in a spirit of brotherhood,” the statement added.
